Assembly Instructions - Mainstays Dining Set

  Posted By Guest:

I had just bought Mainstays Dining Set from Walmart, and figured I would post the assembly instructions here, since I just got done and had to figure mine out on my own after Walmart (or China?) did not include the assembly instructions in the dining set box.

Many of the dining sets work very similiar even if yours is different, especially the glass top tables. Mine was the : "Mainstays Metal and Glass 5 Piece Dining Set" and I bought it at Walmart, but I think Target sells the exact same one or brand.  It figures that the instructions weren't in it since its made in China, I'm just happy all the screws were in and all the parts were in it, I've come to expect poor quality from many made in China items I have purchased like this.

This will save you a TON of time if you follow these assembly instructions, as I have already learned the hard way :)  First off, get all your items out of the box.  The small, thin, heavy box inside is the glass top, don't worry about taking that out of the cardboard yet, just pull it out of the big box and set it aside against a wall.  Get all your other items out of the box and on the floor.
Next set the large box against the wall, top opened, so you will begin discarding the garbage in it as you go, and this will make no cleanup by the time you are done.

You will have (best way I can explain the parts):
A bag(s) of screws and misc items.
Glass top.
4 seat cushions.
8 L-Shaped chair legs (for seat bottom and leg on 4 chairs, I'll call these L-bars)
4 bars with flat endings showing 2 hole connectors on each end. (I'll call these H-bars).
4 bars with nothing but a hole on each end. (I'll call these I-bars).
2 large round pieces (table top and bottom table section)
4 smooth U shaped like legs (for table)
4 Chair backs.

Now organize all before starting. This means:
Remove all cardboard garbage and throw out in huge box.
Removes all plastic covers, and throw out in huge box.
Remove all small separators and junk, throw out in large box.
Group all your pieces together, the L-bars, the I-bars, etc., to save time.
Cut open the bags of screws and misc items, get the L shaped allen wrench out of the bag.
1 phillips screwdriver (you need to supply this).

Note: There is one extra of everything.  One extra of each type of screw, one extra allen wrench (get your wife to help you since there are 2), and one extra rubber suction cup.

Assembly instructions for putting together the chairs:

The short screws with the flat ends (not sharp ends) will be used for almost everything, so its good that kind of the standard.  Take the chair back and set it down so the holes face you (seated side faces you).  Take the 2 L-shaped pieces and use 2 of the screws on each one to connect it. Note! They need to be opposite types, there is connectors on top to connect the chair cushion too, so each one should face in! Make sure each is the opposite type so they both face inward.  Use the small allen wrench to put the screws in, but don't put them tight yet, just loosely.

Now, stand the chair up, it will stand loosely. Grab 1 H-bar and 4 more short, flat end screws, and put the L-bar across the middle where the seat would normally be at, loosely connect it.  You will see that it should angle out as the front is wider then the back, it will make sense when you put in on the chair.  Finally put the I-bar across the front, and you will use the lon####gg flat end screws to go from the outside chair leg in front, through and into the I-bar.

Now that they are all loosely connected, go ahead and tighten them all down with the allen wrench, it fits all those screws.  It actually tightens fairly easily, and once all tight its solid.

Now put the chair cushion on get your phillips screw driver and 4 of the short, sharp end, screws.  Set the chair on its side and press and screw them into the cushion from underneath, it goes in fairly easily with a few sharp turns.  Tighten it.  Note you don't have to CRANK everything as tight as possible, snug is more then enough.  You now have a chair done.
Repeat for the other 3 chairs and parts.  You are now done with your phillips screwdriver.

Now for the table top assembly instructions:

Look at the large table metal piece and you will see 7 holes, one for each rubber suction cup (note that there is 8 suction cups, one extra).  If you only see 7 holes then thats your top, there will be more holes under it on the other side, so set the table top side down so you can work with it.
Now get the flat end short screws, and begin attaching each leg, the U shape goes inside out.  2 screws per each leg, it goes together quite easily, don't tighten it yet.  Now grab the small circular metal piece, and it will attach so the center pieces of the legs are "under" it.  Use the same screws and attach it.  Now tighter them all down with the allen wrench.

Finally set the table where you want it, so you don't have to move it with the heavy glass on top of it.  Put the suction cups in the holes on top, they will sit loosely, the weight of the glass will press and hold them down.

Easily roll out the tempered glass top out of the cardboard.  Roll it easily to your table, and place it on top, on the suction cups.  Your table and chair assembly is now done!

Now throw the extra screws and misc items in your toolbox, you never know when you might need them for something else. Go have a beer on your new table and chairs :)
